What to Pack for Your Vjosa River Rafting Trip: The Complete Checklist

A practical, no-fluff packing guide so you arrive at the river ready for the best day of your Albania trip.

What to Pack for Your Vjosa River Rafting Trip: The Complete Checklist

You've booked your Vjosa River rafting trip — now what do you actually bring? While your guides at Wild Vjosa Rafting provide all the technical safety gear (wetsuit, helmet, life jacket, paddle), there are a few personal items that will make your day on the water significantly more comfortable.

Here's the no-fluff packing checklist we share with every guest before their trip.

The Essentials: What to Wear on the River

Swimsuit or Quick-Dry Base Layer

You'll wear this underneath the wetsuit we provide. Avoid cotton — it stays wet and heavy. A simple swimsuit or synthetic athletic wear works perfectly.

Secure Water Shoes or Old Sneakers

This is the single most important personal item. You need shoes that strap to your feet and can handle wet rocks. Old running shoes work great. Sandals with a heel strap are acceptable. Flip-flops are not — they will come off in the current and you'll spend the rest of the trip barefoot on river stones.

Sunscreen (Waterproof, SPF 50+)

The Albanian sun reflects off the water and canyon walls. Apply generously before gearing up — you won't be able to reapply once you're on the river. Don't forget the back of your neck and tops of your ears.

For After the River

  • A full change of dry clothes — you will be wet, and dry clothes feel incredible after a day on the water.
  • A towel — a quick-dry travel towel takes up less space, but any towel works.
  • A light jacket or hoodie — even in summer, the evening air near the river can feel cool after being in the water all day.

Nice to Have

  • A waterproof phone pouch — if you want photos from the raft. Ask your guide about the best spots to take them. We also photograph every trip, so you'll have memories either way.
  • A hat or cap with a strap — useful on calmer sections. It will fly off in the rapids without a chin strap.
  • Water bottle — staying hydrated matters, especially on hot summer days. We usually take a break mid-trip where you can drink.
  • Snacks — a granola bar or some fruit in a dry bag for the break stop.

What to Leave Behind

  • Jewelry and watches — the river doesn't give things back.
  • Cotton clothing — it gets heavy, stays cold, and dries slowly.
  • Expensive electronics without a waterproof case — accidents happen, even on the calm stretches.
  • Anything you can't afford to lose — leave valuables locked in your car or at the base.

A Quick Note on Seasonal Differences

Spring (April – June): Water levels are higher and the air is cooler. If you tend to get cold easily, consider bringing a thin rash guard to wear under the wetsuit for extra insulation.

Summer (July – September): The water is warmer and the sun is strong. This is when sunscreen and hydration matter most. You might not even need the full wetsuit on the hottest days — your guide will advise.

Autumn (October): Similar to spring. A light thermal layer and the wetsuit will keep you comfortable.

You're Ready

That's it. No special gear, no expensive purchases. Just practical items you probably already own. The river and the guides handle the rest. Pack light, arrive early, and get ready for the best day of your Albania trip.
